Reliability-Centred Maintenance (RCM)

Reliability-Centred Maintenance ensures that an organization continues to operate as intended and while realizing improvements to minimum maintenance levels. RCM recognizes that assets have different potential for failure and incorporates this knowledge into recommendations for maintenance plans that have the objectives of improving machine up-time, reliability, and return on investment.

An RCM strategy can address dominant causes of asset failure. It defines routine maintenance plans that consist of cost-effective tasks that preserve the most important functions while looking at the planned maintenance history to determine recurring faults, etc.

How can a CMMS help build a Reliability-Centred Maintenance strategy?

Effective maintenance software can help users to build a priority matrix for RCM planning. Categories can be set such as:

  1. Emergency – Life, High Risk, Health & Safety.
  2. Urgent – The operation of the organization is at risk.
  3. Priority – To fulfil projects or meet deadlines.
  4. Routine – Prioritized.
  5. Discretionary – Desired but not essential.
  6. Deferred – Only when resources allow.

These basic steps should help you to move towards RCM:

  1. Identify the assets in your organization.
  2. Prioritize the assets based on the criteria above.
  3. Assign assets to groups.
  4. Set the type and amount of maintenance activities required using information such as technical guidelines, analysis of failings, machine history, etc.
  5. Assess the size of your maintenance team.
  6. Identify the maintenance tasks required.
  7. Analyze the impact of failures.
  8. Set the most effective tasks and plan ahead to avoid critical issues.
